On Saturday, July 17, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., BIG ARTS will host a fine arts reception and artist talk to celebrate the current exhibit, “Fast Forward,” which features work by alumni of Florida SouthWestern State College. The reception will be held in BIG ARTS Dunham Family Gallery.  Complimentary wine and other beverages will be available, and the talk will begin at 5:30 p.m..

“We’re thrilled to have a reception and artist talk back at BIG ARTS,” said Program & Gallery Manager Lauren Huff. “It’s really exciting to host these seven young up-and-coming artists at BIG ARTS. This has been a really fantastic exhibit, and we’re really looking forward to having all the artists here to discuss their work.”

Featuring artists Martha De la Cruz, Dalton Howard, Alejandro Gómez Hernandez, Claire Malécot, Leila Mesdaghi, Kirsten Pettifor, and B.A. Wikoff, “Fast Forward” is a multi-media exhibition in which the artists imagine the future from the vantage point of our historically turbulent and uncertain time. The work on display ranges from pieces as personal as sewing together one’s cultural and familiar heritage to work that explores the wider world and interrogates colonialism and income inequality. One piece in the exhibition offers solutions to competitive occupations through an alternative game of chess where players work collaboratively to turn pawns into queens.

“Fast Forward” is currently on display and closes July 31.  Gallery hours are Tuesday-Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. A high-definition virtual gallery walk-through of the exhibit is available at bigarts.org. BIG ARTS is located at 900 Dunlop Road on Sanibel. For more information, call the box office at 239-395-0900 or visit bigarts.org.
