Following approval from the Lee County Board of Commissioners on July 25 and in cooperation with the city of Sanibel Council, the SanCap Chamber announces toll-free all-day Sunday causeway crossings from for six weeks starting Aug. 6. The chamber has branded the toll abatement program Savor SanCap, in conjunction with the Lee County Visitor & Convention Bureau’s (VCB) six-week Savor the Shore promotion.
“We made this request to the city, county manager, and VCB weeks ago in anticipation of the slower fall months. We really hope to motivate more people to come out to the islands for Sunday shopping, visiting attractions, lunch, and dinner,” said John Lai, chamber president and chief executive officer. “Anything we can do to help our businesses, we’re giving it a shot. We are so appreciative for the commissioners’ support passing this abatement with a vote of 5-0, along with support from county staff and the VCB.”
The chamber aims to bring more people across the causeway during the remaining Sundays of summer vacation. The toll abatement will end at midnight Sunday, Sep. 10. During the six-Sunday period, vehicles with or without transponders can enjoy a free trip across the Sanibel Causeway only.
