The Sanibel Island–based coastal adaptive landscape architecture studio was represented by founder Leigh Gevelinger, PLA, who presented the award to Lee Ellen Harder, BIG ARTS Executive Director.

“BIG ARTS Sanibel is a beacon of resiliency within the community,” Leigh Gevelinger said. “It demonstrates not only that the landscape can survive and perform under challenging conditions, but also how thoughtful collaboration between the design team and stakeholders can create spaces that adapt to, and thrive with, the natural environment.”

CVD received a Professional “Award of Merit” in the Institutional Category for landscape design of the BIG Arts Sanibel Campus. ASLA Florida Professional Design awards are awarded based on “quality of design and execution; relationship to design context; environmental sensitivity and sustainability; relevant impact to the profession, public, and/or environment, and resilience strategies; and design value to the client, community, and to other designers”. BIG ARTS Sanibel Campus is an example of a resilient, 100% native landscape.

This award represents the first ASLA design award for landscape architectural work on Sanibel.
