In the aftermath of a series of devastating storms, including Hurricane Ian in 2022, Hurricane Helene, and the most recent Hurricane Milton, FISH OF SANCAP remains determined in its mission to support island residents and the workforce as they navigate long-term recovery. The back-to-back nature of these disasters has left many still struggling to rebuild, repair, and return to a sense of normalcy. Through critical partnerships and community support, FISH continues to enhance its services to meet ongoing needs.

FISH’s partnership with Convoy of Hope has resulted in a generous donation of 10 washers and dryers to help families whose homes and appliances were damaged or destroyed by the hurricanes. These appliances were distributed to clients of FISH still facing setbacks and challenges related to storm recovery.

“Something as simple as doing laundry can become a significant burden for those who have lost so much,” said Maria Espinoza, Executive Director of FISH. “This generous donation from Convoy of Hope helped families restore a basic need and continue healing from the effects of the storms.”

FISH coordinated the distribution of the appliances and also provided a welcome gift basket to each household receiving a washer and dryer. Each gift basket included a laundry basket, detergent, hangers, and an iron—small touches intended to offer a sense of home.

“Thank you for this generous gift,” said a local teacher at The Sanibel School, Alexis Camputaro. “My family and I have been struggling these past few years with unexpected car and home AC repairs and hurricane evacuation expenses. Our washer, dryer and dishwasher are not working, and we really can’t afford to replace them. Getting the washer and dryer is a tremendous help to our day to day lives, and we are very grateful for all FISH does that helps our little family!”

Camputaro shares that it’s been a tough stretch since Ian, Helene and Milton—she’s also been dealing with some medical issues of her own, all while mourning the recent loss of her mother. Both have brought unexpected stress and financial strain. She’s juggling three jobs, and her husband, a fellow teacher, is launching an education consulting business to help bring in extra income. On top of everything, childcare for their two little ones, both in pre-K, is a major expense. “I think once my son starts Kindergarten next year—and a little later, when his sister joins him—we’ll finally be able to catch our breath,” she says with hopeful optimism.

Since Hurricane Ian struck in 2022, FISH has provided continuous assistance through every stage of recovery. Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton increased the challenges, especially for those already economically vulnerable or still waiting on insurance and contractor support. FISH services have included emergency financial assistance, food pantry support, mental health counseling, senior services, and transportation—many of which were expanded after each storm to meet the growing need.

“This is a long journey for our community,” Espinoza added. “Recovery doesn’t end when the skies clear. With the help of partners like Convoy of Hope and the dedicated support of our staff and volunteers, we remain committed to walking alongside our neighbors every step of the way.”
