The Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation has documented an increase in hatchling disorientations this year on Sanibel and Captiva, affecting almost 10% of all nests laid. The beach habitat has changed after Hurricanes Ian, Helene, and Milton, and thinned dune vegetation, combined with lower beach elevation, has exposed lights that were previously obscured. Click below to view lighting guidance and resources. If you find a disoriented hatchling, please contact the SCCF Sea Turtle Hotline at 978-728-3663.
