On Island is excited to announce a collaborative effort with the Sanibel School and the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation (SCCF) as part of our “It Takes GRIT” initiative. This project aims to promote healthy oyster beds by replenishing the essential grit needed for oysters to thrive in our beautiful Pine Island Sound.
As part of this initiative, students from the Sanibel School will engage in a creative and educational experience by decorating oyster shells. These shells will then be transported via SCCF boats to designated oyster beds, where they will play a crucial role in restoring the local oyster population.
“Oysters are vital to our ecosystem, providing habitat for marine life and improving water quality,” said Kate Sergeant,co-owner & originator of On Island . “We are thrilled to partner with the Sanibel School and SCCF to not only enhance our oyster beds but also inspire the next generation to appreciate and protect our marine environment.”
The “It Takes GRIT” initiative embodies the spirit of community involvement and environmental stewardship. By working together, we can make a significant difference in restoring the oyster population and ensuring the health of our barrier island’s ecosystem.
Together, we are making strides toward a healthier marine environment for all to enjoy.
