On Island would like to thank our valued partners, the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation (SCCF) and Coastal Watch, for their collaboration in protecting and enhancing our local oyster beds.
Oysters are a keystone species in our estuarine ecosystems, providing critical benefits such as water filtration, shoreline stabilization, and habitat for marine life. Through our partnership, we have gained valuable insights into the ecological importance of oysters and the role they play in maintaining healthy local waters.
Together with SCCF and Coastal Watch, On Island has implemented initiatives to add substrate, or “grit,” to oyster beds, creating optimal conditions for oyster larvae—commonly known as spat—to settle and grow. These efforts are vital for sustaining oyster populations and promoting the long-term health of our coastal environment.
We look forward to continuing this important work with our partners and the community to ensure the resilience of Sanibel’s natural resources.
