This week at Rotary: We heard from Calusa Waterkeeper Captain Codty Pierce. Codty is a passionate environmental advocate dedicated to protecting Florida’s coastal waters. Inspired by childhood adventures, he leads efforts to preserve the Caloosahatchee River and more than 1000 sq. miles of local Southwest Florida estuaries.
As Waterkeeper, Codty monitors water quality, investigates pollution, and engages communities in sustainable practices. He collaborates with local authorities and organizations to promote policies ensuring clean water for future generations.
Before becoming Waterkeeper, Codty worked with reptiles, wetland restoration, and native landscaping, also running a fishing guide service in Lee County. His deep community ties inspire his commitment to preserving natural resources. Codty emphasizes respecting the environment’s rich cultural history, saying, “We must honor the past to protect the future.”
Driven by a love for Florida’s unique flora and fauna, Codty continues to expand his expertise through research and outreach. He enjoys sharing his knowledge and fostering environmental education.
Codty’s leadership in conservation significantly impacts Florida’s ecosystems. He balances ecological sustainability with community needs, striving for a harmonious future.
When he’s not working, Codty enjoys fly fishing for tailing redfish—a true joy.
