We are all well aware of the horrible fires that destroyed the historic town of Lahaina. The fires claimed many lives and have become the state’s deadliest natural disaster. There is an urgent need to house thousands of people who have lost their homes and everything they own to the devastation. It was not even a year ago when we, as a community and a Club, faced some of the same loss and overwhelming emotions. Thankfully, Rotarians are People of Action, and the Sanibel-Captiva Rotary Club stepped up to help fund the relief and rebuilding effort immediately.
San-Cap Rotary has sent $10,000 to the Maui Fire Relief Fund, a relief fund established through the Hawai’i Rotary District 5000 Foundation. During a special “Happy Bucks” appeal, a tradition in our Club’s Friday morning breakfast meeting where members can donate any amount for special causes, our members committed over $8,000 in one morning! The Club’s Trust Fund rounded up the donation and sent $10,000 directly to the Rotary Maui Fire Relief Fund. The local Rotarians in Hawai’i will distribute relief funds to those impacted but the devastating fire and provide immediate relief and support for the long-term recovery of Maui’s communities.
