SanCap Chamber, in partnership with the Lee County Visitor & Convention Bureau (VCB), cut the ribbon Aug. 19 on a new mural on the west side of the Chamber Visitor Center at 1159 Causeway Blvd. on Sanibel Island. The mural is the fifth of 10 the VCB is debuting in communities throughout the county.

“The murals identify places throughout our destination and what’s special about them,” said Nancy MacPhee, manager of VCB product development. “We want to touch every community, and we have 10. Each mural is interactive, and people can have their pictures taken with it.”

The chamber mural depicts a bicycle parked at a beach access on the islands with the Sanibel Lighthouse, which celebrated its 140th anniversary the following day, in the background. The VCB developed the concept with approval from the chamber and in partnership with the Fort Myers Mural Society. Pine Island artist Roland Ruocco painted the scene. Billy’s Bike Shop on Sanibel Island donated a bicycle to mount next to the mural for photo ops.

“We were thrilled when the VCB came to us with a proposal to become part of its dynamic mural project,” said John Lai, chamber president and chief executive office. “The finished product truly captures the character of the islands and adds an attraction to a formerly blank wall.”

“We were looking for all murals to be in an area where there is good foot traffic,” said MacPhee. “We talked to John and he was immediately onboard, and this building has the most foot traffic. It made total sense.”
