The Charitable Foundation of the Islands (CFI) is beaming with pride as two of our own, John Henshaw (Sanibel City Council member) and Jeff Muddell (CFI Board of Director), represented Team Sanibel in the annual Tunnel to Towers Tower Climb at One World Trade Center in New York City. Thanks to the incredible generosity of our community, Team Sanibel has already raised close to $10,000 for this inspiring cause—earning a spot among the top 15 fundraising teams!
The Tunnel to Towers Tower Climb is a powerful tradition, bringing together about a thousand participants each year to ascend 104 stories in honor of the strength, hope, and resilience that define the American spirit. The event pays tribute to the heroes of 9/11, including FDNY firefighter Stephen Siller and Captain Billy Burke, whose courage continues to inspire us all.
John and Jeff started their climb bright and early at 6:00 a.m. on Sunday, each determined to beat their personal records from last year—and they did! Jeff reached the top in just 28 minutes and 28 seconds, with John close behind at 29 minutes and 29 seconds. Their dedication and determination are a testament to the spirit of Sanibel.
After the climb, Team Sanibel was honored with an invitation to breakfast at O’Hara’s Restaurant and Pub, a cherished gathering place for 9/11 remembrance located just steps from the World Trade Center and the historic Engine Company 10 firehouse.
John is a member of the Sanibel-Captiva Rotary Club.
Jeff is a member of the SanCap Kiwanis Club.
The CFI congratulates John and Jeff for their outstanding achievement and thanks everyone who has contributed to Team Sanibel’s fundraising efforts. If you’d like to support their mission, donations are still welcome at: https://nyctowerclimb.t2t.org/teamsanibel2025
