We recently lost our friend Norm Zeigler, an iconic fly angler, author and fly designer.
Norm is the creator of Norm’s Crystal Schminnow, a “simple” white fly that has caught over 70 species of fish, both salt and freshwater. To celebrate Norm’s life, we are declaring June 2024, “30 days of the Schminnow”.
Here’s how it will work:
- Get some Schminnows. You can tie them yourself based on Norm’s YouTube Video or order them from our friends at Sanibel Fly Outfitters (239) 966-5065 and 239 Flies
(239) 908-3513 or your favorite shop.
- From June 1 – June 30, 2024, fish with a Schminnow wherever in the world you are and record your catches with a clear picture of a Schminnow in the fish’s mouth.
- You can post your photos in one of several ways:
Facebook or Instagram: Post to the Sanibel FlyFishers (Private Group) or your own Facebook or Instagram page, adding the hashtag #Schminnowdays24.

- With your picture, tell us the species of the fish, where and when it was caught.
- If you knew Norm, please include a comment or story about him.
- For each picture of a separate species, you will be entered into a drawing for one of three prizes.
- In July, we’ll gather all the pictures, publish and share them
