In 2023, our Island will mark an historic milestone – The 97th Anniversary of the Sanibel
Community House. Originally built in 1927, long before the founding of the City of Sanibel, the
Community House has been in continuous operation, serving as the central gathering place for
the Island’s civic, social and cultural activities.
We invite you to join us to Celebrate this milestone! Tuesday, January 23, 2024 at 6:00pm you
are invited to the Sanibel Community House to attend our 97th Anniversary Party gathering to
celebrate our community and those that paved the way. The evening will begin with a social
hour, followed by dinner and dancing. Attendees are encouraged to come in casual dress and
wear something white and/or black.
Tickets, tables and sponsorships for the 97th Birthday Gala event can be secured by visiting the
Community House website at: sanibelcommunityhouse.net or by calling 237-472-2155.
Individual tickets are $175 each – or gather some friends and buy a table!
2022 was a monumental year for SWFL specifically, Sanibel and Captiva Islands as Hurricane
Ian made its mark on our Island Community. The devastation it brought tested even the
strongest of character. The Community House survived that test, Islander hearts remained
strong, we persevered, and we are overcoming what has been for some, the challenge of a
lifetime.
The Sanibel Community House has been the “Heart” of the Islands for the last 97 years. In
1926, The Great Miami hurricane would forever change the lives of the existing Sanibel and
Captiva residents, destroying homes, farms and the livelihood of the Islanders. After the storm
as the community began to rebuild, several Island residents thought that we needed a place for
Islanders to meet and to be together as a community, and thus the Sanibel Community House
was born. The Community House became the home-away-from-home for early residents, the
scene of community socials, pot luck dinners, dances, parties, weddings and town meetings.
Over the years, the Community House has been expanded and renovated several times, with
our most recent post hurricane renovation completed just this year. Through the decades it has
continued to serve as a centerpiece for Island community activities.
Throughout its 97 years the Community House has operated without tax-payer support. As a
non-profit 501c3, managed by the Sanibel Community Association (SCA), the facility has
continued to operate as it did in 1927–with funding raised directly from the public through SCA
membership fees, rental fees, business sponsorships, and donation support from residents and
friends. Help us by being a part of the next 97 years of community!
