Islanders, friends and family are invited to the community-wide FISH OF SANCAP Friendly Faces Luncheon, scheduled for Tues., July 9 beginning at 11:00am. Featured guest speakers include two representatives from the City of Sanibel. The luncheon will be held at the Sanibel Recreation Center, 3880 Sanibel-Captiva Road, Sanibel with a virtual option offered.

Says Erika Broyles, FISH OF SANCAP’s Senior Services Director who facilities the monthly event, “We are so excited to welcome our guest speakers from the City and expect this luncheon to be very well attended. Please remember to register early.”

The City of Sanibel’s Natural Resources Director Holly Milbrandt and Public Information Officer Eric Jackson will be discussing the monumental beach renourishment and recovery project that replenished 400,000 tons of sand to Sanibel’s beaches. The purpose of the project, the scope, and plans will be explained, as well as the ongoing effort to build the island’s coastal resiliency. The restoration of Sanibel’s most famous landmark, the Sanibel Lighthouse will also be highlighted in the presentation.

According to the City’s website, ‘Hurricane Ian’s landfall on Sanibel flattened the island’s beach and dune areas. As the storm surge from Ian receded, significant erosion occurred resulting in the creation of channeled gullies along Sanibel’s coastline, brought to the island by approximately 120-160 trucks hauling two to three loads of sand each day’.

“The City of Sanibel’s beach renourishment project was a substantial undertaking generating great interest since Ian,” continues Broyles. “It’s been covered by FOX and NBC news stations, various newspaper publications and has been the topic of conversation among many. We’re excited to learn how the project was accomplished and what the future holds. You don’t want to miss our July Friendly Faces gathering!”

Reservations and meal choices are required by Fri., July 5 to Erika Broyles, [email protected] or 239-472-4775.  Zoom instructions for those joining virtually will be provided with RSVP. There is no meal delivery available for virtual participants.

Sanibel Deli will provide lunch, complimentary to all guests, and FISH will offer their very popular group games and giveaways.
